Sweetwater offense returns in big way against Levelland as Mustangs win home opener

It’s still too early to determine how good Sweetwater’s offense will be this season, but one thing is certain — the current Mustangs are definitely more explosive than they were a year ago.
And on Friday, Sweetwater’s ‘O’ had its highest-scoring game in nearly two years. More importantly, the Mustangs got their second win of the season — doubling their total from a year ago — by routing Levelland 46-14 in their home opener at Mustang Bowl.
Sweetwater (2-1) got a bit of a late start, but that was due to the fact that it was playing the last game of a first-ever Friday doubleheader at the TSTC Sammy Baugh Classic.
Once the Mustangs actually took the field, though, they wasted little time find-ing the end zone.
Sweetwater elected to receive the kickoff, and it took the team just four plays to go ahead 6-0.
Quarterback Taylor Jones got the drive started with first-down runs of 24 and 14 yards as the Mustangs quickly moved to Levelland’s 22. From there, Jones connected with an incredibly wide open Parker Scott for the first six points.
Sweetwater then forced a quick three-and-out and Jarrell Houston returned a short punt 20 yards to the Levelland 31. A 24-yard pass to Sterling Reeves put the ball at the 4 and from the 1, Houston went over for a 12-0 advantage with 7:16 still left in the first period.

Sweetwater’s Ryan Linebaugh (14) brings down a Levelland runner while Kyle Lambert watches. The Mustangs easily beat the Lobos, 46-14, on Friday at the TSTC Sammy Baugh Classic.

Levelland (0-3) took ad-vantage of a muffed punt to get within 12-6, but Andrew Leyba’s 61-yard kickoff re-turn put Sweetwater back in business at Levelland’s 29. B.J. Walker’s 2-yard run and a two-point conversion pass increased Sweetwater’s lead back to 14 points, 20-6.
Then the unusual game got even crazier, as Levelland’s Preston Woodard returned the Mustangs’ kickoff 88 yards for a score with just three seconds left in the first quarter, cutting Sweet-water’s lead to 20-14.
But wait, the craziness wasn’t done. On Sweetwater’s next series, Jones hit Tanner Crain for a 72-yard touchdown pass almost immediately to get the lead back to 12, 26-14.
It stayed that way until halftime, though Sweetwater had more chances to add to its lead after starting drives at the Lobos’ 34- and 37-yard lines only to be denied both times.
Things got a little tight for the Mustangs at the start of the second half as Levelland drove from its 17 to Sweetwater’s 7 until the Lobos’ quarterback, Nick Runkles, lost two yards on a fourth-down run. Sweetwater started from its 9, but then regained its early-game magic.
From the Mustang 37, Walker was nearly stopped on a run for about a two-yard loss. But then he pitched back to Jones, who raced 65 yards for a spectacular score, making it 33-14 Sweetwater as the Mustangs regained control.
Jones then increased the lead to 40-14 when he threw to tight end Connor Stafford for a 13-yard score with 9:43 left in the game.
Once again, the Mustangs got great field position for their final scoring drive of the game after Jones had retired to the bench. Star-ting from Levelland’s 29, Sweetwater scored its last TD on a 1-yard run by Josh Gomez with just :32 left.
Sweetwater’s defense held Levelland to five first downs and 207 yards, while the Mustangs had 451 yards — 248 passing on 12-of-20 accuracy by Jones, as well as 203 yards rushing.
The three scoring passes by Jones increased its total for the year to five.
Sweetwater is back on the road this Friday at Early, but the Mustangs will then play three straight at home starting with their homecoming game against Midland Greenwood Sept. 24.
Sweetwater hosts Midland Christian the following week and will then begin District 5-3 action by entertaining Wylie on Oct. 8.

Hey!! All three of us say the same thing. Razz Yes, it does take a lot of time and effort in to making these videos. And it would be SOOOOOOOOO nice to have several people post back on them other than the same 2 or 3 even. Of course the kids help make the video by the great plays that we capture, but we want to know what EVERYONE thinks!!

See i think I come off like a jerk asking for more comments and more talk on this place. There are some players that talk, and I do give them special treatment. just look at the way I slow down Tanner getting up after his catches and this week when he signaled a first down. usually I would cut that out, but he's active I'm gonna do extra stuff for him. if the kids knew that they'd all be on here talking and posting their own pictures and stuff.

actually as far as my graphics go. I have barely shown the tip of the iceberg as far as what I can do for them. I just haven't had incentive

I don't care what quality the pictures are. post em here or on the facebook group. 99% of the time content lack of content drives users away from a site. my stuff could be the best stuff on the net, I just don't have enough.

As far as the user problems I have set up a group on facebook for people to use. so you can spread the word about that. Honestly I would rather use this place but that's just me.

I will set up an early thread as soon as I post this
