Loboes use air attack to soar past Mustangs

MONAHANS — Making a second long road trip in as many weeks was bad enough. But the killer for Sweetwater’s Mustangs on Friday night was the Monahans Loboes’ pass and catch combination of Wade Roark to Ricky Robledo.
The two hooked up five times for 133 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Loboes im-proved their record to 2-0 with a 35-7 win while hand-ing Sweetwater its first loss.
Roark was a nighmare for Sweetwater in other ways as well. The Loboes’ quarter-back, in addition to com-pleting 9 of 12 passes for 198 yards, also rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries and intercepted two passes in the second half on defense.
Sweetwater, which racked up 416 yards in a 27-13 season-opening victory over Vernon, did little offensive-ly until Mustang quarter-back Taylor Jones completed a 14-yard TD pass to Malcolm Black with only 3:31 left in the game.

Kevin Sepeda tries to escape a tackler while teammate Hunter Johnson (70) offers blocking help in Friday’s 35-7 non-district loss at Monahans.

Sweetwater was able to hang with Monahans until late in the first half when the Loboes twice used the Roark-to-Robledo route to increase their lead from 7-0 to 21-0. Robledo caught a 21-yarder with 1:25 left to cap a 12-play, 80-yard drive.
Monahans then quickly recovered a fumble on the next series, and Robledo’s 16-yard catch at the 37-second mark made it 21-0.
In the third quarter, the Loboes — not really known as a passing team — relied on their running game for two more touchdowns.
Micah Ramsey scored on runs of 8 and 68 yards to finish the night as Monahans’ top rusher with 92 yards, almost equalling the total for Sweetwater (94 yards) in the contest.
Early on, though, there was reason for the Mustangs to think that it just might be their night. The Loboes fumbled it away on the third play of the game, and Cameron Fox and Sam Nemir recovered the fumble caused by Jacob Villalpando.
Sweetwater failed to cash in, though, and fell behind 7-0 when Robledo caught Roark’s 37-yard pass with :18 left in the first quarter.
Monahans lost another fumble in the second period and Ryan Mercer recovered at Sweetwater’s 40. Sweet-water got to Monahans’ 33, but a sack pushed the Mus-tangs out of scoring range and the Loboes ate up most of the rest of the half with their two scoring drives.
B.J. Walker led Sweetwa-ter’s rushers with 49 yards on nine carries, but no one else had more than 16 yards. The passing game wasn’t a lot better with just 57 yards for the evening.
Coach Craig Slaughter is glad that his team will final-ly be playing at home this Friday when the Mustangs host Levelland at the sixth annual Sammy Baugh Clas-sic. “I thought our run defense was pretty good, but we had some miscommunication in our pass defense and the offense let us down,” he said. “There weren’t any positives there.”
