Mustangs finish with 47-7 loss ABILENE — Good news has been hard to come by this season for Sweetwater, especially in recent weeks.
But in the final minutes of their final regular season game against a very strong Wylie team that had ano-ther victory well in hand, the Mustangs finally — yes, finally — had good news.
Even though Sweetwater still trailed by 40 points, the Mustang players and coaches were celebrating as Ken Norman scored on a 4-yard run with just 47 seconds left and Jason Vause kicked the extra point to cap a nine-play, 76-yard scoring drive.
If nothing else, it showed that Sweetwater — with nothing to play for other than Mustang pride — was not throwing in the towel against one of the best Class 3A teams in the state. That would almost be forgivable, considering the kind of year it’s been for Sweetwater.
But after a night where No. 9 Wylie (8-1, 4-1) not only scored 28 first-quarter points with the help of a strong wind that allowed the Bulldogs to dominate the field position battle, then add another 19 points while forcing four turnovers and threatening to become the sixth team — and third straight — to shut out the Mustangs, Sweetwater (1-9, 1-4) got a small amount of redemption at the end.
A lost fumble deep in Wylie territory with five minutes remaining — Sweetwater’s fourth of the night — led to a 1-yard touchdown run that extended the Bulldogs’ lead to 47-0 with 3:30 left in the contest. But Sweetwater finally found the end zone with time running out at Wylie’s Bulldog Stadium, ending a string of 13 straight scoreless quarters dating back to the first half against Graham back on Oct. 16.
Sophomore QB Taylor Jones, who had a busy night throwing the ball with a season-high 27 attempts, threw a 13-yard pass to Vause to start the drive and also had two big runs — a 10-yarder on fourth-and-2 and a 32-yarder that gave Sweetwater first-and-goal at Wylie’s 8-yard line. Then he handed off twice to Nor-man, whose touchdown brought a lot of smiles — and possibly some relief — to his Mustang teammates as well as the coaches.
The last drive, according to coach Craig Slaughter, showed “total character” by the team.
“It would have been easy for them to check it in, but they didn’t,” he said. ‘They won my respect.
“It’s easy to keep working hard when you win 10 games. But it’s not easy when you’ve had the kind of year we’ve had.”
Wylie, which had the wind at its back in the first quarter, first scored on a 17-yard fumble return after Sweetwater coughed it up on the second offensive play of the game.
Sweetwater held on to the ball on its next series, but gained just three yards and a 21-yard punt allowed Wylie to start at the Mustang 44 and score in just five plays for a 14-0 lead. The Bull-dogs then scored twice in the final two minutes of the quarter, starting their pos-sessions at Sweetwater’s 30- and 46-yard lines.
The Mustangs had the wind in the second quarter, but they were still unable to score while Wylie added two more touchdowns for a 40-0 halftime advantage.
Jones finished the night with 106 yards passing on 14-of-27 through the air and was also Sweetwater’s top rusher with 45 yards on 11 attempts, while Vause led all receivers with seven catches for 53 yards.
