High school football player wearing pink to show love for his mom

By Jared Fields

Friday, October 16, 2009

Dakota Brewster had his mom, Jody, take him to Wal-Mart late one evening to get pink shoelaces.

Although not typical for a 15-year-old high school freshman to wear pink anything, much less shoelaces, Jody asked why he was going through so much trouble to wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“He said, ‘Mom, when you were going through all of this, you never missed one of my games,’” Jody Brewster said.

He told her it’s the one month of the year he could tell his mom he’s proud of her.

“It broke my heart,” Jody Brewster said.

She had a bilateral mastectomy more than a year ago and then went through reconstructive surgery this spring.

When first dealing with everything, she said she tried to shield her three boys — ages 15, 12 and 8 — from what she said was an embarrassing moment in her life.

“I just really didn’t think the boys would understand that, nor feel comfortable hearing that,” she said. “To my surprise, I have been very wrong.”

Dakota Brewster, a freshman at Clyde High School, is not only honoring his mom during his freshman team football games but getting others involved as well.

During Thursday’s freshman game at Eastland, he got teammates to wear pink ribbon stickers on their helmets. Dakota Brewster had pink athletic tape, gloves and the shoelaces.

“I just wanted to show mom how proud I am of her and how much I love her,” he said of his pink attire.

The freshman team isn’t the only group in Clyde to wear pink, either.

The varsity team a week ago wore pink ribbon stickers on their helmets. The junior varsity team Thursday wore pink socks. And at school, students in all grades wore pink to school Thursday.

“I think it’s a great deal if 14- and 15-year-old kids are aware of cancer and know it’s a major deal that affects a lot of us,” said Jeremy Munoz, Clyde’s freshman team coach. “It’s great these kids are even thinking about that.”

The rise in pink’s popularity within the school is something the principal can’t explain.

“I don’t know if there’s any particular reason other than our kids have become aware of an issue that’s very important and been important in some of their lives,” said Terry Phillips, Clyde High School principal.

As well as raising awareness, Dakota Brewster is also trying to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Team Brewster has 13 people signed up for today’s Fashion for the Cure Fun Run.

“I was wanting to raise money because I didn’t want people to go through what my mom went through,” said Dakota Brewster, whose team raised almost $200. “I don’t know if we’ll run for time or run just for fun. I know we did something good to raise money and to raise the money so people could go buy medications — stuff they need and can’t afford.”
