VERNON — Obviously, losing a scrimmage isn’t as bad as losing an actual game. Still, giving up four touchdowns and scoring none Friday at Vernon in Sweetwater’s final tuneup for the 2009 football season wasn’t what head coach Craig Slaughter had in mind.
Vernon rushed for two touchdowns during the controlled por-tion of the scrimmage and two more after the teams played a live 12-minute quarter. Sweetwater got inside Vernon’s 10 on two oc-asions, but an interception in the end zone ended the first threat and the second ended on downs. In addition, the Mustangs had a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jason Vause that was negated by a holding penalty. Quarterbacks Jake Lawrence and Kris Mayes threw a total of three interceptions and were just 7-of-21 for 110 yards. B.J. Walker (8 carries, 44 yards) and Mayes (9 carries, 41 yards) were the team’s top rushers and Vause led all Sweetwater receivers with three catches for 73 yards. Connor Stafford (35 yards), Cameron Fox (7), Ken Norman (3) and Clint Jay (2) also caught passes. Vernon had scoring runs of 12, 1, 17 and 4 yards and finished with 350 yards on 50 rushes. Vernon went to the air just seven times, completing three for 49 yards.
