CLASS 3A Division II Vernon (5-5) vs. Liberty Hill (11-0)
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Game site: Mineral Wells
Kickoff time: 4 p.m. Saturday
Last week: While Vernon was on a bye, Liberty Hill was pitching a 27-0 shutout against West.

Game summary: The Lions had to win their last two games just to make the playoffs. Their reward is Class 3A’s top-ranked team. Liberty Hill is a two-time defending 3A champion with the state’s longest winning streak at 35 games. The Panthers’ Slot-T offense generates an amazing 444 rushing yards a game, including 57 rushing TDs this season. Four different rushers have more than 650 yards, and both fullback Ryan Fickel and tailback Dusty Boyd surpassed the 1,000-yard mark.
Vernon’s defense must win the battle on first down, forcing Liberty Hill into as many throwing situations as possible. Craig Whiteside has collected back-to-back 200-yard games for the Lions, but Vernon coach Keith Hall said they’ll need to get others involved offensively to keep Liberty Hill off-balanced. That includes QB Ryan Smith, who completed all six of his passes against Iowa Park. Liberty Hill’s bi-district shutout was its fourth of the season.

Players to watch: (V) LB Jesus Lora; DB Kyle Railsback; RB Eric Wilson; (LH) LB Brad Esch; LB Cody Lattimore.
Coach’s quote: “We have our work cut out for us. They run right at you and they like doing it.” — Vernon’s Keith Hall

If Liberty Hill wins they will have faced two 5-5 teams. If Vernon wins it will be considered a big upset.
