man this one left a bitter taste in my mouth. you guys won this game save for 3 big plays. you have to eliminate giving them those big plays. do that and I would pick you over anyone the way you played last night.

hope everyone is feeling ok, or recovering well. I know some of you got some bumps and took some big shots, as well as a few cheap shots. (Can you say kicking the qb in the facemask while getting up from a tackle?)

the audio on the vid got disabled on youtube. sorry about that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br0KJvv8a9c

Wylie makes most of its opportunities, Sweetwater does not

* By Daniel Youngblood
Original Story Here

SWEETWATER — After scoring on just one of five trips to the red zone in what turned out to be a lopsided loss to Midland Christian last week, Sweetwater’s red zone woes continued Friday in its district opener against Wylie.

Sweetwater (4-3, 0-1) dominated the time of possession, ran nearly twice as many plays as Wylie and had four drives of 50 of more yards, but the Mustangs came away with just 10 points on four trips inside the Wylie 20 in a 21-10 loss.

“In this district, our goal is definitely to shorten the game, frustrate people and keep it away from them,” Sweetwater coach Craig Slaughter said. “But we have to score.”

While Sweetwater’s ball control offense played a large role in the Mustangs’ time of possession advantage, just as responsible was Wylie’s quick-strike ability.

The Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0), who outgained Sweetwater 363-289, scored in five plays or fewer on each of its three touchdown drives to overcome an early deficit and earn the win.

“I thought our kids matured a lot tonight,” Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said. “I thought we’d been pretty mature through those nondistrict games, but that really showed tonight. We didn’t panic. We came back and took the lead by half and then held on.”

Wylie trailed 7-0 six minutes into the game and 10-0 before the Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard.

Sweetwater’s Jarrell Houston returned the opening kickoff 63 yards to the Wylie 34 yard line. And after moving the ball 16 yards on six plays, Taylor Jones hit Connor Stafford up the seam for an 18-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-9 play.

The score stood at 7-0 until the 5:34 mark of the second quarter, when the Mustangs capped a 14-play, 70-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal by Jordan Houston. Sweetwater had first-and-goal from the 2 on that possession, but Wylie pushed the Mustangs backward on first and second downs, then forced an incompletion on third.

After being held scoreless through the game’s first 18:47, Wylie exploded for two touchdowns in the final 5:13 of the first half.

Joe Nasser, who ran 16 times for 218 yards and two scores, burst free for a 47-yard touchdown run to answer Sweetwater’s field goal. And after forcing a Mustangs punt, the Bulldogs took their first lead on their next possession.

On 2nd-and-7 from the Sweetwater 44, Jamie Boyd took a pitch from quarterback Colin Harris on a reverse and hit Richard Bloomer behind the Mustangs defense for a 55-yard strike to the Sweetwater 1.

And after failing on his first attempt to score, Harris punched the ball in on second down to put the Bulldogs up 14-10.

“I was pleased with the way our kids executed,” said Sandifer, whose team possessed the ball for less than 7½ minutes in the first half. “I thought we put pressure on them when we had the football, which was something we had to do.”

Up 14-10 at halftime, the Bulldogs put the game away late in the third with their final score. On the second play of the possession, Nasser took an option pitch right and raced 70 yards for a touchdown to make the score 21-10.

Sweetwater, which had a field goal blocked before Wylie’s final touchdown, threatened to answer on its following possession, driving 76 yards to the Wylie 2. But BJ Walker fumbled a handoff from Jones and Wylie recovered at the 11.

The Mustangs had two more chances, but couldn’t covert either drive into points, allowing Wylie run out the clock late.

“That fumble at the 1-yard line starting the first quarter hurt,” Slaughter said. “It was fixing to be 21-17 and this place is fixing to come to life and your kids energy is fixing to be off the charts. But that turnover really, really hurt.

“But credit Wylie. They executed great.”

Minus the big plays on defense of course. Keep big spring from sprinting 50+ for points and play like you did. this won't even be a contest
