Former Sweetwater High School athlete Willie Amos will be returning to his hometown this weekend.
Amos, a 2000 graduate of SHS who was a successful football and track athlete at Nebraska before later playing professional football — while also making a name for himself as a world champion jump roper — will be at Sweetwater's Mustang Bowl on Saturday and Sunday.
But Amos, an all-state football player as well as a UIL state track champion here during his high school days, won't be suiting up for a return to glory. Instead, the 28-year-old is in town to offer "sports performance enhancement training" for interested athletes from this area.
The training will be offered through his current company, (F)Amos Fitness, and his "Trainin' Day" sessions are intended to accelerate an athlete's level of play in a number of sports including football, basketball, track and field, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, volleyball and field hockey.
Four one-hour sessions for male or female athletes will be offered on both days, with the first two sessions for middle school age students and the last two sessions for those who are high school age to the pro level. The cost is $10 per session (10 athletes per session). Athletes will be allowed to participate in just one session per day.
The starting times for the Saturday sessions will be 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. while starting times on Sunday will be at 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Athletes should make contact and/or pay in advance to secure a spot with a first-come, first-serve policy. They can reach Amos by calling (817) 600-8239 or at amos.willie@gmail.com.This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Those attending the sessions should bring training shoes and cleats as well as water for the training, plus according to Amos, a work ethic and motivation.
After graduating from SHS, Amos was a safety, cornerback and wide receiver at Nebraska, where as a sophomore in 2001 he was named Big 12 defensive player of the week and played in the national championship game at the Rose Bowl in Miami.
Even though his college football career was marred by injuries, Amos was noticed by the NFL and was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent, becoming a member of the Bears' practice squad.
Most recently, he played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League, but the Eskimos released him this past June.
Amos' greatest passion is jump roping, where during his high school days in 1999 he was part of a world champion jump rope team that also included Cliff Forbes, Shaun Hamilton and Chris Holmes that competed in St. Louis, Mo. He was also a national champion at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. that year.
Since then he has continued to compete by performing world-class jump roping exhibitions all over the nation including halftime performances at NBA and college basketball games, as well as teaching the sport to others.
