Mustangs hope to make another road statement

Sweetwater’s season-opening 27-13 win at Vernon this past week was a big one for the Mustangs in many ways. It equalled Sweetwater’s win total for all of 2009 and marked the first season-opening victory in four years. The Mustangs also got their first regular-season road win since claiming a 59-41 victory at Brownwood on Oct. 31, 2008.
Sweetwater hasn’t been 2-0 since 2006. To do that, the Mustangs must make another long road trip Friday and knock off a very good Monahans team coming off a 43-42 win at Snyder this past Friday.
Sweetwater forced four turnovers against Vernon and the first two led directly to the Mustangs’ first two touchdowns. In order to beat Monahans, it may take a similarly inspired defensive effort.
The Loboes did the same thing in their win over Snyder, picking off three passes and recovering a fumble while committing just one turnover. Monahans’ Wade Roark not only completed 8 of 11 passes with two touchdowns, but also intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble to help secure the victory.
If going 2-0 isn’t motivation enough, the Mustangs also want to avenge a 48-0 loss to Monahans a year ago. But it’s been only two years since Sweetwater beat its longtime West Texas rival and ex-district foe. The Mustangs were a 17-14 winner in 2008, the last time that they traveled to Monahans.
Last week’s win showed Sweetwater’s players are finally adapting to second-year head coach Craig Slaughter’s I-formation after years of the wishbone. Several individual players on both sides of the ball had big games and the Mustangs had 416 total yards against Vernon. Slaughter hopes they can find a way to do it again on Friday.
“I’m a little worried about two long trips in a row,” he said. “But there’s a sense of urgency because we’re playing a good team and a traditional rival.
“There won’t be great expectations out-side Sweetwater, so this is a chance for us to open eyeballs. Of course, our expectation level will be high. If we win it could put us in great shape for the next few weeks.”
After this week, Sweetwater plays four of its next five at home as the Mustangs try to continue erasing the dismal memory of last year’s 1-9 record. Beating Monahans would by itself go a long way toward doing that.
“Our number one goal is to take care of the ball,” Slaughter said. “They’re not going to beat themselves. We’ve also got to play physical with them, and we have to execute both offensively and defensively.”
