This year's sixth annual TSTC Sammy Baugh Classic at Mustang Bowl will have some familiar teams and faces.
The classic will feature four games from Sept. 9-11, including a rare Friday night doubleheader.
The action kicks off Thursday, Sept. 9 with Albany taking on Merkel. Both teams are no strangers to the Bowl, as Albany has competed in playoff games here while Merkel was formerly in the same district with Sweetwater. However, this will the first appearance for both teams in the Sammy Baugh Classic.
Friday's doubleheader on Sept. 10 begins with Clyde, another first-time participant, facing Snyder in the Bowl at 5:30 p.m. Snyder is in Sweetwater's district and beat Marlin 28-12 when it made its only other Classic appearance back in 2007. The Tigers return to the Bowl on Oct. 22 to play Sweetwater in a district game.
Clyde also has very strong connections to Sweetwater as head coach David Ritchey played football here in the early 1990s for his dad, ex-Mustang coach Tom Ritchey. He is beginning his second year at Clyde where he replaced Craig Slaughter, who is now the head coach at Sweetwater.
The Clyde-Snyder game will be followed by Sweetwater's game Friday against Levelland, which will kick off 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Snyder-Clyde contest. It will be the home opener for Sweetwater.
The members of the Sammy Baugh Classic committee will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 31 to discuss how the gate situation will work between the two games. Slaughter said Clyde officials have agreed not to empty the stadium between games.
"We have some details to work out and will announce the plans following our meeting later this month," said Classic co-chairman Ted Thomas. "We hope that we can make this work so everyone can enjoy two great football games."
Levelland is also making its first Classic debut while Sweetwater is 4-1 all-time.
Roscoe and Stamford will end the Classic when they meet at 1 p.m. Saturday. This will be the first appearance in the event for Stamford while Roscoe is 4-1 and has come to the Bowl each year. But Jonathan Haseloff, who replaced Wes Williams, will make his Classic debut as head coach at Roscoe.
